Milo Baughman began his love for design at an early age – at the age of thirteen, his family gave him the task of redesigning the interior and exterior of their new home in Long Beach, California. After high school, Baughman hoped to pursue architecture but was interrupted by World War II. After serving four years in the Army Air Forces, Baughman returned to Southern California where he studied at the Art Center School of Los Angeles and at the Chouinard Art Institute (later known as the California Institute of Arts). In 1947, Baughman founded Milo Baughman Design with an emphasis of “high style, low cost” – which enormously contributed to the success of Thayer Coggin, Inc., who was Baughman’s main account until his death in 2003. Baughman once stated that his furniture pieces were designed for people who “didn’t have much money but had good taste”. Throughout his career as a designer, Baughman also served as an influential educator. In 1969, Brigham Young University in Utah, invited him to establish a Department of Environmental Design – in which he remained chairman and professor for several years, then after a 12 year leave, returned as a senior lecturer at BYU for another nine years.
